History of Strangers Rest Lodge #240

On November 1, 1858, Most Worshipful Grand Master Solomon D. Bayless granted a dispensation to the Lodge authorizing it to act under the title and name of Strangers Rest Lodge, F.&A.M.U.D., and appointed the following named officers; John D. Marks, WM; William L. Barker, SW; and Simon P. Lowe, JW.

On November 3, 1858, the Lodge held it's first meeting under said dispensation and elected A.W. Adams Treasurer; Morris W. Bennett, Secretary; J.M. Maxon, Senior Deacon; John B. Hudspeth, Junior Deacon; and Grant T. Dunigan, Tyler.  The last meeting of Strangers Rest Lodge U.D. was held May 18, 1859.

On May 25, 1859 the Grand Lodge of Indiana granted a charter, executed by Grand Master Solomon D. Bayless, to the members of Strangers Rest Lodge U. D., styling and naming the same, Strangers Rest Lodge #240 F.&A.M.

On June 3, 1859, officers of the new Lodge were elected and installed in due and ancient form and Strangers Rest Lodge #240 F.&A.M., was regularly organized with full power to work as such under the charter granted, with Worshipful Brother William L. Barker being placed in the East.

On June 9, 1859, the first regular meeting of the new Lodge was held in the Hebron International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge #144 in a hall they rented from Brother George B. Hudspeth on the South West corner of Third and Locust Street, that has since  been torn down, where Town Square Furniture is now located.
